Mode I stress intensity factors for symmetric edge cracks approaching a circular hole have been determined by photoelastic techniques. In this thesis the crack was simulated as a notch with finite root-radius of 1mm.
Experimental results for symmetric edge notched specimens are represented in terms of notch length to width ratio a/W. For $a/W \legg 0.7$, the measured $K_I$ values are in good agreement with Bowie's results for symmetric edge cracks, while the results for a/W>0.7 show a good agreement with Irwin's results.
Results for symmetric edge notches approaching a circular hole, represented in terms of hole diameter to with ratio D/2W, show that for D/2W=0.21, 0.255, 0.3 and 0.4 the measured $K_I$ values are 11%, 18%, 23% and 51%, respectively, greater than those without a circular hole. It is observed that the $K_I$ values are increased by a factor of 1.2 to 3 as the notch gets very close to the hole, within the distance D/2.
a/w가 0.7보다 작은 경우에는 측정된 $K_I$ 값이 symmetric edge cracks에 대한 Bowie의 결과와 잘 일치하나 a/w가 0.7보다 큰 경우에는 Irwin's 결과들과 좋은 일치를 보인다.
