Recently, robotic-assisted MIS(minimally invasive surgery) systems have been developed globally with advantages, e.g., speedy recovery and the scarring of patients. As opposed to manual MIS systems, in the case of robotic MIS systems, the surgeon does not directly operate the surgical tool but controls the master device. However, master devices for robotic MIS systems has several drawbacks such as limited workspace, and increased inertia with the use of actuators.
In this paper, a new master device for robotic MIS systems is proposed. The proposed master device is consisted of passive joints, and was developed to control the major movements of slave systems. The joint alignment of master device is same with the movement of the 6-DoF movements of the surgical tool in an abdominal cavity. The overall mass is minimized, and moving mass is compensated with a constant-force spring.
To evaluate the design of the proposed master device, workspace and manipulability analysis was performed. Based on the analysis, it was concluded that the proposed master device has extended workspace with high maneuverability against a commercialized haptic and da Vinci master device.
The feasibility of the developed master device is verified by usability test. Experimental results showed the applicability of the proposed master device in robotic assisted minimally invasive surgery system.
