As environmental conditions worsen globally, firms have begun to look to environmental management prac-tices to improve company performance. This study uses an objective database, ASSET4, to investigate the relationship between environmental and firm performance; further, it examines how a board-level corporate social responsibility (CSR) policy affects this relationship. The empirical results show that environmental performance is associated with firm performance, and that firms with good environmental management practices can generate high performance. Further, the existence of a CSR committee policy is found to intensify the relationship between environmental performance and firm performance. These findings contribute toward a better understanding of the relationship between environmental performance and financial performance, and offers guidance to managers who want to improve firm performance when they invest in the environmental aspects of a firm’s business activities.
전 세계적으로 환경문제가 심각해짐에 따라 많은 환경규제들이 가해지며, 기업의 환경경영역량은 하나의 경쟁력이 되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 객관적 자료들을 기반으로 기업의 환경경영의 점수를 산출하는 ASSET4 데이터베이스를 사용하여 환경성과와 기업성과의 관계에 대한 연구를 진행하였다. 나아가, 위원회 수준의 CSR정책의 존재유무가 어떻게 이 관계에 영향을 미치는지 조사하였다. 실증분석 결과, 환경성과와 기업성과는 긍정적인 관계를 가짐을 보이며 기업의 우수한 환경경영이 더 나은 기업성과를 창출함을 시사했다. 또한, CSR위원회를 독립적이고 효과적으로 유지하기 위한 기업내부정책의 존재가 환경성과와 기업성과의 관계를 강화함을 밝혔다. 본 연구는 환경성과와 기업성과의 관계에 영향을 미치는 조절요소에 대한 연구에 기여하며, 환경성과와 기업성과의 관계를 더 잘 이해하도록 하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한, 이러한 발견은 사업의 환경적 측면에 투자를 통해 더 나은 기업성과를 창출하고자 하는 경영자에게 하나의 지침이 될 수 있을 것이다.
