Despite its importance in expressive quality, stage lighting in dance performances has been controlled exclusively by professional technicians rather than a dancer. This is because stage lighting usually requires high understanding of the theoretical basis and heavy equipment, making it barely accessible to people without long-term training. Because stage lighting is out of reach of a dancer, the dancer has to communicate continually with lighting technicians to ensure that the lighting plays a proper role in establishing the mood and reinforcing the dancer’s expressions. However, the dancer’s intentions are often distorted and misunderstood during this process, making the lighting impede the performance instead of supporting it. Thus, it will be greatly helpful if a dancer is allowed to directly control stage lighting using the movements of his/her body.
Although it is technically feasible to make stage lighting interactive with the dancing, the major challenge is that there is rarely a standard for matching dance movements to lighting. Since most interactive dance performances are performed without a professional lighting designer, the interactive system should be aware of which lighting it should be dictating during the performance. Thus, there should be a rule that dictates which kind of dance movements should be matched to which kind of stage lighting. Establishing this rule will help to greatly improve the expressiveness of an automatic, interactive dance performance.
The goal of this research was to set a standard for matching dance movement to stage lighting. For this, when a dancer performs a movement to express a certain emotion, the characteristics of the movement were first figured out. Based on previous studies on the relationship between movement and emotion, the interactive system then figured out which emotion the dancer was expressing. Then, based on previous studies on the relationship between emotion and lighting, the system was set to decide how to control lighting to best express the emotion of the dancer.
As a result of this research, eight characteristic dance movements for eight emotions were mapped to eight stage lighting patterns. By altering the dynamics of a movement, a dancer could control the lighting according to which emotion she wanted to express. The mapping of dance movement to stage lighting and the method to set up an interactive lighting system are expected to be helpful for future dancers and/or artists who want to use stage lighting effectively as a part of an interactive dance performance.
무대조명의 표현적인 효과에도 불구하고, 무용 공연에서는 무용수보다도 전문 기술자가 무대조명을 담당하는 경우가 많다. 무대조명은 이론적인 기초에 대한 다년간의 지식과 기구를 다루는 기술적인 능력을 필요로 하는 분야이며 장기적인 훈련을 거치지 않으면 다루기 어려운 분야이기 때문이다. 무용수는 조명을 직접 조절할 수 없으므로 무대조명이 무용의 표현력을 강화하고 적절한 분위기를 형성하도록 하기 위해 전문 기술자와 끊임없이 소통해야 한다. 하지만 이러한 소통 과정에서 무용수의 의사와 기술자의 의견이 충돌하거나 의도가 왜곡되어 무대조명이 효과적으로 표현력을 높이지 못하거나 오히려 표현력을 감소시키는 결과가 생긴다. 따라서 인터랙티브한 무용 공연에서 무용수가 직접 자신의 신체 동작을 사용해 조명을 조절할 수 있도록 할 필요가 있다.
기술적인 측면에서 무대조명이 무용과 상호작용할 수 있도록 만들 수 있지만, 어려운 점은 무용 동작을 조명으로 연결시켜 주는 기준이 거의 없다는 사실이다. 대부분의 인터랙티브 무용 공연은 전문 조명 디자이너 없이 이루어지므로 공연 동안 어떤 동작에 따라 어떻게 조명을 조절해야 하는지 기준을 만들어 인터랙티브 시스템에 입력해 놓을 필요가 있다. 만들어진 기준은 자동화된 인터랙티브 무용 공연에서 무용의 표현력을 톺이는 데 크게 도움이 될 것이다.
이 연구의 목적은 무용 동작을 무대조명에 연결시키기 위한 기준을 만드는 것이었다. 이를 위해 일단 무용수가 어떤 감정을 표현하기 위해 어떤 동작을 수행하면 시스템이 동작의 특징을 인식하도록 했다. 특징을 인식하고 나면 동작과 감정의 관계에 대한 사전 연구에 기초해 무용수가 어떤 감정을 표현하려고 하는지 프로그램이 판단을 내린다. 마지막으로 감정과 조명의 관계에 대한 사전 연구에 기초해 무용수의 감정을 표현하기 위해 조명을 어떻게 조절해야 할지 프로그램이 판단을 내리고, 이에 따라 무대조명이 조절된다.
이 연구의 결과로 여덟 가지의 감정을 나타내는 여덟 가지의 특징적인 무용 동작이 여덟 가지의 무대조명 패턴으로 맵핑되었다. 무용수는 동작의 특징을 바꿈으로써 자신이 표현하고자 하는 감정에 맞춰 무대조명을 직접 조절할 수 있었다. 이 연구에서 무용 동작을 무대조명에 맵핑한 결과와 인터랙티브 조명 시스템을 설치한 방법은 인터랙티브 무용 공연에서 무대조명을 효과적으로 사용하고자 하는 무용수와 연출가들에게 큰 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.
