Thermal conductivity is an important thermal parameter of soils or rocks to bring a solution to problems related to energy geo-structures. The objective of this study to understand effects of engineering conditions and parameters of soils and rocks on their thermal conductivity, and to design an in-situ thermal conductivity measurement system for soils and rocks.
First, engineering parameters affecting to the thermal conductivity explored via laboratory experiments with Ottawa 20/30 sand and Gochang weathered soil. The thermal conductivity appeared to be affected by porosity, vertical effective stress, and degree of saturation. The thermal conductivity linearly increased with decreasing porosity. An increase in vertical effective stress increased the thermal conductivity because of increases in void ratio and grain contacts. The thermal conductivity remarkably increased with an increase in degree of saturation, showing a non-linear relationship. Previous empirical and theoretical models were compared with the obtained experimental results, and a new prediction model that uses dry thermal conductivity, saturated thermal conductivity, and degree of saturation was suggested to predict thermal conductivity of soils and rocks with varying degree of saturation.
Second, a system for measuring in-situ thermal conductivity of soils and rock was developed. A thermal needle probe for in-situ measurement was newly designed based on laboratory experiment and numerical simulation results. From the laboratory experiments, it was identified that the length/radius ratio of a thermal needle probe larger than 19 was required for needle probe geometry. To offset in-situ measurement error, designed thermal needle probe length/radius ratio is significantly larger than 19.
Thereafter, the control and measurement system using NI-PXI system and the post-processing code were developed. Thereafter, the designed in-situ measurement system was evaluated by numerical simulation using a finite element code COMSOL and by mock-up experiments. Numerical simulation and mock-up test results showed that the developed system could estimate the thermal conductivity values with acceptable errors.
