The current site classification system and the corresponding site coefficients for seismic design code in Korea are based on Uniform Building Code (UBC) 1997, which was developed based on the recorded earthquakes and geological conditions in the western United States. However, the use of site amplification coefficients derived from the earthquakes occurring under considerably different site conditions can misrepresent the amount of ground shaking and potential damage to structures during an earthquake. In Korea, the bedrock depth is usually shallow (< 30 m) and the transition from soil to hard rock is abrupt. Recent studies have shown that the site coefficients derived using site response analyses of sites in inland areas of Korean peninsula vary considerably with the current site coefficients; the short-period coefficients (Fa) are under-estimated and the long-period coefficients (Fv) are over-estimated. Further, the main soil parameter for seismic site classification used in many countries, VS30 (mean shear wave velocity of the top 30 m of soil), is found to be unsuitable for Korean geotechnical conditions as higher VS30 values are assigned to soil sites having shallow bedrock depth due to extrapolation of undesirable VS of bedrock to the depth of 30 m. Hence, the use of bedrock depth (H) and the shear wave velocity of soil layers (VS,soil) as two main parameters for site classification is suitable for shallow bedrock regions like Korea. In this study, a new seismic site classification system with corresponding site coefficients was developed considering the Korean geotechnical conditions by improving on the previous research for seismic code development.
Site response analyses were performed for 300 soil sites collected across the Korean peninsula by using equivalent linear analysis technique. The site coefficients (Fa and Fv) were determined for each of the 300 soil sites from the results of site response analyses. Based on these site coefficients, the sites were first divided using the H into two site classes (H1 and H2), and then further subdivided using the VS,soil into four subclasses. Design response spectrum was proposed for each subclass based on the average and standard deviation of site coefficients of sites within the site class. The design response spectra were then subsequently improved by adjusting the period of integration interval for calculating the site coefficients, thereby showing a better match with the average spectral accelerations as compared with the design response spectra without any modification. Finally, a new site classification system consisting of four soil sites classes, a rock site class, and a special site class was proposed, which is simple, reliable and more practical to follow than those proposed in earlier studies.
The proposed site coefficients for the new site classes were verified whether they are more suitable for local geological conditions than the site coefficients in the current Korean seismic code. The comparison of proposed design response spectra (PDRS) with the response spectra from other seismic codes/studies were made for similar site conditions to highlight the reliability and superiority of the PDRS as compared with the current seismic code, especially regarding the amplification level in the short-period range. Likewise, the site coefficients derived from recorded acceleration data during recent earthquake events in Korea showed a tendency towards short-period amplification, which was consistent with the proposed site coefficients for most of the site classes, albeit the shaking intensity was small.
Finally, the seismic responses of simplified soil models were evaluated in dynamic centrifuge test using various simulated earthquake motions. The responses of simulated soil models were used to verify the design response spectrum developed based on extensive site response analyses in the current study for equivalent site classes. The seismic responses of uniform and layered sand models showed a good match with the design response spectrum, especially after adjustment of spectral accelerations obtained from centrifuge test results for rigid-base boundary condition. However, the seismic response of clay model was affected by the interaction between soil and the side walls of the equivalent shear beam (ESB) container, and thus the response was unrepresentative of the one-dimensional seismic response. The results showed that the dynamic centrifuge tests could be an alternative way to verify the reliability of the PDRS, especially when there is lack of strong ground motions records for verification.
