The cation radical formed when benzene was adsorbed on activated H-Mordenite surface was investigated by EPR technique.
The g-value of the cation radical was 2.0025, the proton hyperfine, splitting constant was approximately 2G, and the spin density was calculated to be in the order of $10^{16}$ spins/g catalyst.
The fact that the hyperfine splitting constant of 2G, approximately half the value anticipated for the cation radical of benzene suggests that the radical has a structure of single unpaired spin equally shared between rings, presumably a sandwich-like configuration.
The variation of spin density with different activation temperature of Mordenite can be related to the concentration of decationized sites formed at elevated temperature.
It seems that both the decationized sites andooxygen radical species formed on the surface are responsible for the formation of the radicals.
