In sports analysis, one of the main stream is that finding optimal strategies at the decision making points during the game. Curling has plenty of decision making points. Even the nickname of Curling is ‘Chess on the Ice’. There has been few studies related to curling strategies, however, those have limita-tions that the coverage of decision making points are narrow.
Markov Decision Process that is developed from the Markov Chain model proposed by Kostuk represents decision making problem of curling. By solving Markov Decision Process model, the optimal strategies are determined.
One of the outcome of this study is that finding the optimal strategies at whole decision making points of those strategies. The other important outcome is ‘Bifurcation situation’. It means that only the most aggressive strategy or the most conservative strategy become the optimal strategy. The condition and the proof of ‘Bifurcation’ are included in this study.
경기 진행 중 전략을 선택해야 하는 상황에서 최적의 전략을 찾아주는 것은 스포츠 연구에 있어 중요한 방향 중 하나이다. 컬링은 경기의 특성 상 전략 결정 상황이 매우 많은 스포츠이다. 하지만 아직 상황에 따른 최적의 전략을 찾아주는 연구는 부족한 상황이다. 기존 연구에서 컬링 경기를 마르코프 연쇄 모델로 나타낸 것에서 출발해 전략(Action), 전이 확률, 보상(Reward)를 정의하여 컬링 경기를 Markov Decision Process로 나타내었다.
이 연구의 결과물 중 하나는 전략 결정이 필요한 시점마다 최적의 전략을 찾아줄 수 있다는 것이다. 또 다른 결과물은 어떤 Markov Decision Process 모델에서는 중간 단계 전략들은 최적의 전략이 되지 않는 양극화(Bifurcation) 현상을 발결하고 또 증명한 것이다.
