Metallic nanoparticles have been received great scientific attention for a variety of applications in optics, electronics, magnetics and catalysis because of its unique, size-dependent properties. In addition, assembly of these materials into ordered nanostructures creates additional novel properties. Many studies have been demonstrated synthesis of metallic nanostructures with controlled size and shape. But, assembly of ordered nanostructures is more challenging. One of strategy for creating ordered assemblies is template-directed growth. The basic mechanism of template-directed growth is well developed. However, there are three principal factors to limit the effectiveness of this method.
We report here new approach to assembly of metallic nanomaterials into ordered nanostructures.
After focused electron beam irradiation on silver clusters template, they drastically shrank and expelled the large number of nanoparticles at the same time. As distance from silver template increased, average particle size decreased. Also, by varying the spot-size of electron beam, we could find that there exists a critical current density, necessary to initiate the reaction.
By template directed growth, we observed self-assembled silver nanoparticles with different shape, size and morphology but without any ligand. In addition, we could observe the hexagonal structure of silver nanoparticles sub-15 nm. These results suggest there exists the critical size of hexagonal phase in silver nanoparticles.
Using Pt acetylacetonate solution with silver nanoparticles, We not only demonstrated the templated growth but also applied a silver cluster template to synthesize the platinum nanoparticles with sub-10 nm size.
