Mobile communications systems have become an integral part of our lives. They allow us to interact with anyone from anywhere at any time. Underneath this visible functionality resides a complex stack of technologies. Subscribers of a mobile service are served with a signal from cell towers -- base stations, which combined form an area of service coverage. Mobile network operators are increasingly interested in how they could leverage their domain knowledge. They possess detailed information about the structure of their network, a sophisticated topology that strives to provide reliable connections to all subscribers.
This topology is growing increasingly dense, with units shrinking in size to improve signals and account for the ever increasing flow of data traffic.
This thesis aims to provide a concept on how this situation can be converted into an opportunity: A framework capturing the essence of subscriber mobility, unveiling the potential for innovative services based on an operators topology. To support this theory, a crowdsourced set of mobile network measurements is utilized to construct a topology of network cells. The topology is then enriched with external data.
The thesis demonstrates that travel activities can be classified based on sparse mobile network measurements. It also shows that activities such as the dwelling at points of interests can be predicted, enabling new insights into what individuals are doing at specific locations.
This framework developed in this thesis faces some of the same challenges that mobile network providers are facing when contemplating the use of a subscribers communication details. It provides insights on how a service oriented architecture, providing customer facing benefits, can be aligned with considerations for privacy and usability.
