Molybdenum ions have been exchanged into zeolite Y by solid-solid reaction. Reactions of thiophene with hydrogen were undertaken over MoHY catalysts in the temperature range of 300℃ to 500℃ in the fixed-bed reactor system.
Products were analysed by means of gas chromatography and mass spectrometer. Detected products were hydrogen sulfide, butadiene, $C_4H_6S$, tetrahydrothiophene and unidentified sulfur compound of higher molecular weight.
The conversion of thiophene into products was correlated with molybdenum content and ring hydrogenation increased with reaction time whereas the amount of cracked products decreased. EPR spectra of HY and MoHY with and without the adsorption of thiophene were obtained at liquid nitrogen temperature to investigate the reaction intermediate of thiophene over molybdenum species.
In view of the hyperfine structures of the EPR spectra of thiophene over molybdenum(V), it seems that thiophene forms the charge-transfer complex perpendicularly coordinated to molybdenum(V).
