In recent years, public organizations and enterprises increasingly utilize big data analytics towards the goal of achieving their business excellence. Often the challenge, however, is in defining which types of business cases, to adopt in and utilize such a powerful tool with high productivity and efficiency.
The purpose of this research is to propose a concrete and practical framework for big data theme ideation to minimize possible trial-and-error prior to big data implementation project. The proposed practical framework would facilitate creative methodology using design thinking for innovation through big data.
Design thinking is a human-centered approach to implementing business innovation, which helps discover a real world problem and find a creative solution through experimental way of prototyping and testing.
When a conventional system of big data analytics based on users' requests and experiences is utilized, the users often find difficulties in delivering proper requests due to unfamiliarity with evidence-based decision making process and big data analytics. At the same time, IT practitioners too are challenged by overwhelmingly growing size and complexity of the big data analytics itself that they often fail to identify users' requirements.
To improve productivity and efficiency in utilizing big data analytics, data scientists are expected to take a leading role in ideation of big data theme using their expertise in the field. However, they can also easily fall into the trap of putting excessive focus on analytical methodology itself facing difficulties in defining the end-to-end business process. Therefore, developing a method to overcome aforementioned limitations in current approaches for big data theme ideation is becoming more important in recent years.
This study offers a practical alternative method developed based on interviews with a focus group composed of industry leaders. Though it has yet to be verified in a real business practice, the method is developed with the goal of accelerating the ideation process while minimizing the cost caused by trial-and-errors. Further-more, the method is expected to help organizations, enterprises that want to discover real business problems and to make productive use of big data, and would benefit software vendors for running business projects involving big data analytics.
최근 몇 년간 빅데이터 애널리틱스 구축을 위한 공공 기관과 기업의 노력이 활발히 시도되고 있으나, 어떠한 주제로 빅데이터를 활용하여 비즈니스 가치를 실현해야 할 지, 그 선정 과정에서의 어려움은 여전히 겪고 있다. 본 연구는 빅데이터 주제 선정 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 시행착오를 최소화하기 위하여 보다 구체적이고 실용적인 빅데이터 주제 선정 프레임워크를 제시하고자 하였으며, 창조적인 혁신에 기여하는 빅데이터의 구축을 위해, 디자인 사고(Design Thinking)를 적용하였다.
종래의 IT부서를 중심으로 주관하는 사용자 요구 기반의 정보시스템 구축 방식을 활용하여 빅데이터를 구축하는 경우, 사용자는 빅데이터에 대한 이해와 경험이 부족하거나 데이터 기반의 의사결정 문화에 익숙하지 않아, 요건을 제시하기 어려움을 느끼게 되고, IT는 빅데이터 관련 기술과 시스템 구축 자체에 치중하여 함께 프로젝트를 하더라도 성공적인 빅데이터 요건을 도출하고 정의하기가 어렵다.
반면, 빅데이터에 대한 전문가라 하여 데이터 과학자 주도로 빅데이터 요건을 정의를 하는 경우, 자칫 과학적인 분석 방법론 자체에 치중하게 되고 빅데이터를 활용한 서비스 등을 정의하기 어려워 결과적으로 비즈니스 가치를 놓치기가 쉽다.
빅데이터를 구축하면서 빠지기 쉬운 위와 같은 시행착오가 성공적인 빅데이터의 비즈니스 가치 실현으로의 적시성을 놓칠 수 있는 바, 본 연구는 인간 중심의 행동심리학적 요소를 가지면서도 직관적 사고와 분석적 사고를 융합한 디자인 사고 방법을 적용하여 그 한계를 극복하고자 했다는 점과, 빅데이터 전문가 그룹 인터뷰를 거쳐 보다 현실적인 방안을 정의했다는 데에 그 의의가 있다.
다수의 빅데이터 주제 선정 프로젝트에 실제 적용하고 평가해 보지 못한 연구 방법 상의 한계가 있고, 다양한 환경에 따라 보완적인 도구로 활용해야 하는 경우도 있을 수 있으나, 앞으로 빅데이터에 관련된 기관, 기업, 그리고 솔루션 업계의 관계자들이 빅데이터 프로젝트를 수행함에 있어 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대한다.
