Recently, robotic hands are used in various applications such as prosthetic devices, humanoid robots and so on. As the increased utilization of the robotic hands, versatile and precise motions of the multi-fingered robotic hands have been required. However, despite many researches on the robotic hands, much remains to be improved.
In this thesis, a novel concept of operation method for a finger-type manipulator was proposed that al-lows optimal operation of the distributed actuation mechanism. Distributed actuation was motivated by the human finger muscles [1]. By the actuation of the sliding mechanism which implements the human finger mus-cles, the forcing points can be freely relocated so that the required motion is easily conducted. Together with the redundancy of the multilinked structure, the distributed actuation mechanism was shown to enhance the effi-cient operation of the manipulator by velocity and force modes.
For the analysis of the mechanism, mathematical equations of the fingertip force and velocity were de-rived. In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed mechanism, we proposed the allowable force and velocity along the base directions. Through the optimization scheme, the maximum fingertip force and ve-locity were achieved, respectively. The experimental results verified the notable effects of the distributed actua-tion for dual purpose operation.
Meanwhile, based on the multi-objective optimization, the concept of multiple-mode distributed actua-tion mechanism was proposed to consider the fingertip velocity and force, simultaneously. For the given trajec-tory and tasks, the optimal operating parameters were determined by the multi-objective optimization to max-imize the fingertip velocity and force, simultaneously.
From the dual- purpose operation of the distributed actuation mechanism, it is possible to determine the limitations of the fingertip velocity and force, respectively. And detailed control planning is possible through thee multiple-node operation. Therefore, from the information obtained above, optimal operation of the distributed actuation mechanism was achieved.
