Effect of back pressure of a plastic reciprocating screw injection-molding machine is investigated theoretically and experimentally.
Assuming power-law fluid, velocity distribution in the barrel is determined, and then the expression for the weighted average total strain is obtained. It is shown that the weighted average total strain is of both flow rate and back pressure.
In the experiment both polystyrene and polyethylene are used as test materials, and the exponents of power law fluids are determined.
Colour dispersion and tension tests are made to investigate the effect of back pressure and thus weighted average total strain on uniformity and tensile strength.
It is found that colour dispersion is improved for both materials as the weighted average total strain is increased. It is also found that tensile strength is not dependent on the weighted average total strain in polystyrene, while tensile strength increases to a certain value and falls down in polyethylene.
