Cyclic heat treatment has been applied to vanadium modified AISI 4330 steel for improving the mechanical properties, especially tensile and impact properties. In the present work, conventional and alternate cyclic heat treatreatment have been applied.
Experimental results showed that a remarkable grain refinement can be obtained by cyclic heat treatment. The strength and impact value were increased in conventional cyclic heat treatment, but the strength tended to decrease with increasing the impact value in alternate cyclic heat treatment. It was found that the best heat treatment condition was fourth cycle of conventional cycling. The result of this treatment showed that the grain size was reduced from about 15-20μm mean grain diameter to 2-3μm at the end of fourth cycle.
The grain refinement can be attributed to the rapid nucleation of austenite due to the accumulation of residual stress during repeated cyclic heat treatment. It is believed that the increase in strength is caused by the grain refinement and fine carbide precipitation, and the increase in impact value is also due to the grain refinement.
