In this thesis, the envelope-derived timing recovery of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) system is studied. A 4800 bps data is transmitted and the timing information is obtained from the data stream itself. Since the spectral line does not exist in the bandwidth efficient system, a nonlinear processing is required. The timing recovery circuit consists of a square-law device followed by a norrowband filter tuned to the clock rate.
The output of the timing circuit is shown to be a nearly sinusoidal waveform which exhibits some phase fluctuation due to timing jitter. Timing jitter due to random noise seems negligible but it strongly depends on the shape of data pulse and data patterns. Thus the waveshaping of baseband signal is found to be a very important factor to reduce the interference and to improve the strength of the timing tone.
A QAM transmitter and the timing circuit of receiver is designed and tested for 2400 Hz binary signal rate. The statistical properties of timing wave is studied with relation to the data statistics. Mean and variance of timing wave is derived. The prefilter and postfilter characteristics which can eliminate the jitter are shown.
