L-type zeolite and faujasite-type zeolite were synthesized and $K^+, Ca^{++}, Ba^{++}$ exchanged zeolites were prepared by ion exchange technique.
In this study, molecular sieving effect of the kind of various cation exchanged zeolites (L-type zeolite, faujasite-type zeolite and mordenite) by measuring the adsorption capacities of xylene isomers with capacitance manometer adsorption apparatus.
In the case of L-type zeolite, similar amount of each xylene isomer were adsorbed and the effect of cation exchange was not observed. Each xylene isomer was respectively c.a. 20 % of void volume of mordenite.
In faujasite-type zeolite, when the cation with large ionic radii as $Ba^{++}$ and $K^+$, the difference of absorption capacities between p-xylene and o-or m-xylene adsorbed. The difference increased as the degree of exchanged cation content.
It is believed that the exchanged cation blocks the effective pores of zeolite. This observed phenomena is well known molecular sieving effect.
