Thermogravimetric analysis was used to investigate the kinetics of the conversion of rice hulls to $Si_3N_4$ in the temperature range from 1195℃ to 1350℃.
It is postulated that the reaction rate controlling step in the overall process is the diffusion of CO gas from the surface of carbon particles to main body of $N_2$ gas fluid through the gas film around the carbon particles.
The kinetics followed a nearly linear rate law at initial reaction stage. Without any catalyst, the experimental activation energy for the formation of $Si_3N_4$ from Korean rice hulls is 43.5 kcal/mole.
The effect of Fe and CaO as a catalyst was investigated. The reaction rete was enhanced with increasing surface area of catalyst.
$3SiO_2 + 6C + 2N_2 \longrightarrow Si_3N_4 + 6CO$
