For data compression of graphic images, two different types of run length code, linear code and logarithmic code, were compared.
The performances of these two kinds of code were analyzed for six different types of image data. As a result of these analysis, it is shown that the logarithmic code is a better choice for actual image data.
The logarithmic code has the advantage in that it is less sensitive to variation of the block size than the linear code.
Coding system of the logarithmic code with the two bit sub-block size was designed and implemented, along with line synchronization and error correction systems.
Run length의 기본적인 확률 분포 특성과 이에 따른 linear code 및 logarithmic code에 관한 특성을 검토하였다.
몇가지의 서로 다른 종류의 image data에 대해 computer를 이용하여 linear code 및 logarithmic code의 여러가지 특성을 측정하였다. 결과로써 linear code는 First order Markov source에는 거의 optimal하나 실제 data는 exponential분포가 아닌 문제점이 확인되었다. 반면에 logarithmic code는 실제 image data에 대해 linear code에 비해 비교적 큰 compression ratio를 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 실제적 장점으로써 logarithmic code는 linear code에 비해 block size의 변화에 덜 sensitive함을 확인하였다.
구성이 간단한 logarithmic code $H_1$ 의 system을 설계 제작하였다. 또한 synchronization 및 error correction system도 설계 구현하였다.
설계 구현된 logarithmic code $H_1$ system은 단편적인 data에 대해 정상 동작을 하였다. 실제의 graphic data를 이용한 실험은 못했으나 simulation 결과와 비교하면 compression ratio 5 : 1은 가능한 것으로 기대된다.
