The catalytic reduction of nitric oxide by ammonia was studied over Cu(II)-ion exchanged Y, X, A type Zeolites and Mordenite.
The order of activity was found to be $CuX > CuY ≫$ Cu-mordenite$\approx$CuA, and in each case the catalytic activity showed reversible bell shaped temperature dependence with maximum between the temperature of 100˚- 140℃.
Temperature programmed desorption and E.P.R measurement indicated that in the case of CuX and CuY Cu(II)-tetraammine complex was formed which acted as an active center, but not in the case of CuA and Cu-mordenite.
It was also found that in the case of CuX and CuY, ammonia coordinated with Cu(II) was partially desorbed at about 120℃ where the reaction rate began to decrease.
Therefore, it may be thought that decrease in the activity at high temperature is duc to the destruction of active center at elevated temperature, and difference in the activity among various types of zeolites is due to the difference in the extent of Cu(II)-tetraammine complex formation and its stability.
