Kinetics of the reaction of hydrogen with titanium and Ti-Fi alloys have been studied in the temperature range of 890℃-1030℃ at 8 - 19 Torr hydrogen pressure using thermogravimetric method.
It is found that reaction controlling step of both reactions is hydrogen diffusion in metals.
The diffusion coefficients of hydrogen in pure Ti and Ti7at% Fe alloy are
$D(cm^2/\sec)=1.62\times10^{-3} \exp (-\frac{6650\pm410}{RT})$
and
$D(cm^2/\sec)=1.58\times10^{-3} \exp (-\frac{7450\pm300}{RT})$
respectively.
Iron decreases markedly the diffusion coefficient of hydrogen. It can be probably explained by that Fe decreases the interstitial site of titanium lattice.
$D(cm^2/\sec)=1.62\times10^{-3} \exp (-\frac{6650\pm410}{RT})$
$D(cm^2/\sec)=1.58\times10^{-3} \exp (-\frac{7450\pm300}{RT})$
