In this thesis, the empirical and the theoretical models for fuel rod behavior in a power reactor are synthesized to investigate the performance of fuel rods loaded in Ko-Ri unit 1. The temperature profile, elastic and creep deformation, stress distribution and rod internal pressure are predicted based on the proposed models of fuel densification, swelling and fission gas migration in the grains of uranium dioxide.
The performance of the fuel rods are numerically calculated applying an integral computer code, FROD 1.0.
The fuel rods satisfy all the safety criteria for the steady-state power history of maximum power and maximum burnup during cycle 1,2 and 3, and even for the worst case within 2σ(95% confidence) bounds of stochastic design parameters.
It is found that overpower ramp accidents result in fuel rod failure after the maximum fuel duty during cycle 1,2 and 3 because of the fuel-clad mechanical interaction.
It is recommended to lower the allowed peaking factors and/ or the maximum power ratings of Ko-Ri unit 1 in order to eliminate fuel rod defects. And further study on the safety analysis of fuel rods is suggested for including iodine stress corrosion cracking problem.
