The objective of this thesis is to investigate the maximum heat transfer rate and the mechanism of heat transfer in an annular heat pipe.
The capillary absorption limit, which is dominant among various limits of heat transfer in low-temperature heat pipes, significantly increases due to the annulus between the wick and pipe-wall, while thermal resistance increases linearly when boiling does not take place.
A 4-ft long annular heat pipe which consists of stainlesssteelmesh and copper tube with water as the working fluid is made in the experiment. The maximum heat transfer rate and the thermal resistance are estimated by measuring the temperature distribution along the pipe wall and the vapor temperatures in both the evaporator and the condensation section.
Comparison of the experimental data with the analytical results shows good agreement, which indicates that the maximum heat transfer rate and the thermal resistance increase in the annular heat pipe.
