The ionic permeabilities across modified cellulose acetate membranes cured at 75 ℃, 80 ℃, and 85 ℃ have been measured at the same operating conditions for alkali and alkali earth metal salts.
In order to account for any change of membrane performance under high pressure, the results have been obtained in terms of the reduced permeability. Independent of shrinking temperatures and anions, the magnitudes of the separation ratio of ions are shown to be ordered as follows: $Li^+>Na^+>K^+$ and $Ba^{++}>Mg^{++}>Sr^{++}>Ca^{++}$.
The mobilities of ions and water in modified cellulose acetate membranes are affected by the physical and chemical properties of the ion in solution, the properties of the membrane and the mutual interactions between solvent, solutes and membrane. In consideration of these factors which affect mobilities of various ions, the observed separation order for the cellulose acetate membrane is explained based on the criteria of the hydrated ionic radius in motion and the partial dehydration free energy.
