A laboratory scale single-stage continuous culture apparatus was constructed in order to explore reasonable ways of producing chlorella which have potential value as feed and human food. Using the apparatus $\underline{chlorella}$ $\underline{ellipsoidea}$ was grown batchwise and evaluated each component of Tamiya's medium which has been widely used for the mass-culture of chlorella. All mineral salts, except $FeSO_4.OH_2O$, have found to be excess for the growth of the organism. Better responses were observed by replacing $KNO_3$ with urea. Based on these observations a new culture medium for chlorella was developed.
A typical batch growth curve was obtained by the use of the modified medium and the new apparatus. From the batch data, operation condition for continuous culture were predicated mathematically. Through several runs of continuous operation with dilution rates within the range of 0.005 $hr^{-1}$ to 0.04 $hr^{-1}$, the accuracy in both of apparatus and prediction method was confirmed.
