A numerical study is made of double-diffusive convection in a rectangular cavity with combined horizontal temperature and concentration gradients. Numerical solutions to the governing full time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations at large thermal ($R_t$) and solutal ($R_s$) Rayleigh numbers are acquired. The essential details of flow, temperature and concentration fields are described for a large value of the Lewis number. The time evolutions of these fields are portrayed. The vertical profiles of the velocity, temperatures, solute, and the local Nusselt number are constructed, delineating the influence of solutal buoyancy effect relative to the thermal effect.
The present paper is consist of four parts according to the boundary conditions at the bounding walls.
In the First, the fluid is initially at rest with a pre-existing stably stratified solutal gradient. The motion is initiated by abruptly raising the temperature at one vertical sidewall. Far-reaching analyses are made of the numerical results over a wide range of the solutal Rayleigh numbers $R_s$ using the thermal Rayleigh number, $R_t=10^7$. The categorization of the basic character of the flow into the supercritical ($Ra > Ra_c$) and subcritical regimes ($Ra < Ra_c$), which is based on experimental observations, is satisfactorily verified by the numerical results. The present numerical simulations are also supportive of the prior observations, which illustrated the qualitative difference in the time-dependent patterns of the formation of the layered structure in the supercritical and subcritical regimes. By assessing the present numerical results, the previous estimate of the value of $Ra_c\cong1.5\times10^4$ has been found to be reasonably accurate.
Secondly, the fluid is initially at rest with a pre-existing vertical solute gradient as the same way in the first part. However, both a horizontal temperature gradient and a vertical solute gradient are externally applied on the cavity boundaries and maintained so thereafter. Classification of the steady-state flow patterns, over a range of the buoyancy ratio $R_\rho[\equivR_s/R_s]$, is attempted. When $R_\rho$ is small, a unicell flow, characteristic of a purely thermal convection, is apparent. When $R_\rho$ takes moderate value, a multi-layered flow structure is discernible. When $R_\rho$ is large, the fluid in the entire cavity is substantially motionless.
Thirdly, the boundary conditions at the vertical sidewalls are imposed in a such a way that the thermal and solutal buoyancy effects are counteracting, resulting in an opposing-gradient flow configuration. Distinct flow regimes in the steady state are identified as the buoyancy ratio $R_\rho[\equivR_s/R_t]$ varies over a wide range. The structures of the thermal, solutal and velocity boundary layers near the sidewall are examined. When $R_\rho$ is moderate, the multi-layered flow structure in the interior is clearly depicted; the attendant S-shaped thermal field and the step-like concentration distribution are brought into focus. The existence of the layered flow structure in the core is strongly corroborative of the results of the prior experimental visualizations. Based on the numerical data, the steady-state mean Nusselt number $\overline{Nu}$ and Sherwood number $\overline{Sh}$ are tabulated for varying values of $R_\rho$. As $R_\rho$ increases from a very small value, $\overline{Nu}$ decreases monotonically toward a value characteristic of a conductive transfer; however, $\overline{Sh}$ reaches a minimum value when $R_\rho$ takes a moderate value.
Lastly, the externally-imposed temperature and concentration gradients are antiparallel and aligned in the horizontal direction, constituting the cooperating-gradients flow configuration. As a sequel to the previous account on the opposing-gradients situations, the details of velocity, thermal and solutal structures are revealed for a large value of the Lewis number. In an analogous manner to the cases of the opposing-gradients, four distinct steady-state flow regimes are identified as the buoyancy ratio $R_\rho(\equivR_s/R_t)$ varies over a wide rage. When $R_\rho$ is moderate, the multi-layered flow structure in the interior core is discernible; the associated S-shaped thermal field and the step-like concentration field are clearly disclosed. Time-evolutions of the flow developments are displayed. The major discrepancies between the results of the cooperating-gradients cases and the opposing-gradients cases are exposed. The present numerical results are found to be qualitatively consistent with the available experimental observations. Based on the numerical data, the steady-state mean Nusselt number $\overline{Nu}$ and the Sherwood number $\overline{Sh}$ are computed over a broad range of $R_\rho$. The differences are noted in the behavior of $\overline{Nu}$ and $\overline{Sh}$ with varying $R_\rho$ between the cooperating-gradients flows and the opposing-gradients flows.
The behavior of the details of the computed flow characteristics is in good qualitative agreement with the available experimental findings.
