Polymer solar cells have a number of advantages over conventional solar cells such as being flex-ible, printable, portable, and inexpensive production cost, which would be advantageous for practical ap-plications. The polymer solar cells have reached a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of ~11%. However, the incomplete absorption of a thin active layer based on polymer bulk heterojunction limits the full use of the solar spectrum. Parallel tandem structure provides an effective way of enhancing the absorption and therefore the PCE of polymer solar cell. The necessary condition for the parallel tandem solar cells to attain a high PCE is that the common electrodes should have high optical transmittance and electrical conductivity. To meet the condition, comb-shaped common electrodes (CSEs) based on gold and conduc-tivity-enhanced poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PEDOT:PSS) were present-ed as common anodes. Compared to gold thin films, the CSEs improve the optical transmittance of the common anodes significantly with a minor sacrifice of electrical conductivity.
The highly conductive PEDOT:PSS (PEDOT:PSS+DMSO) is a polymer that is solution processable and highly transparent and conductive. The structure of parallel polymer tandem solar cells is ITO/ZnO/P3HT:PC71BM/common anode/PTB7:PC71BM/LiF/Al, where ITO is indium tin oxide, P3HT is regio-regular poly(3-hexylthiophene), PC71BM is [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester and PTB7 is thieno[3,4-b]-thiophene/benzodithiophene. The sheet resistances of common anodes based on PE-DOT:PSS+DMSO, CSEs, silver and gold films are 60.8 Ω/□, 30.9 Ω/□, 14.3 Ω/□ and 14.2 Ω/□, respec-tively. The optical transmittance of PEDOT:PSS+DMSO is much higher than that of CSEs, silver and gold films. As a consequence, the tandem cell containing a common anode based on PEDOT:PSS+DMSO showed the highest PCE of 6.08%, which is 22% higher than the tandem cells containing a common anode based on silver and gold films.
The parallel tandem solar cells were analyzed using an equivalent circuit model, which enabled us to estimate the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, fill factor, and PCE of the parallel tandem cells. The theoretical results showed excellent agreement with the experimental ones. The modeling indicated that the optical transmittance of a common anode in parallel tandem solar cells is more influential than the resistance.
