In this dissertation, a design methodology based on the distributed actuation principle is proposed to achieve a high-performance robot manipulator. Spatial movement of the actua-tion points provides several advantages such as high payload capacity, high efficiency and a light weight structure for the proposed robot manipulator. Based on the analysis, the distrib-uted actuation mechanism using a single slider is adopted for the proposed manipulator. A prototype of the manipulator with two degrees of freedom is developed and controlled as an example. Moreover, a robust operational space control for a distributed actuation robot ma-nipulators using time-delay control (TDC) is presented. The proposed control method com-bine an output torque model and forward kinematics of a distributed actuation manipulator with a conventional Jacobian based torque control. In addition, the proposed control assures a robustness against the external load and internal friction of sliders using TDC. Moreover, as an application, optimal trajectory generation method is developed for the minimum energy consumption of a distributed actuation manipulator. The proposed trajectory is optimized by genetic algorithm. The efficacy of the proposed method is verified by two degrees of free-dom robot manipulator using distributed actuation mechanism. Finally, a novel redundant hybrid distributed actuation manipulator is proposed. The optimal configuration of distribut-ed actuation mechanism is efficiently realized by adopting the null space motion of redun-dant manipulator. In addition, the number of actuator for the optimized torque generation in operational space is decreased than the dual slider distributed actuation manipulator. In addi-tion, the control method is proposed for the dynamic consistency and maximum torque con-trol. Note that all of the proposed methods are experimentally verified.
