Even though oil refining companies have been the important role on Korean economy, the recent busi-ness status is not favorable for them due to the stagnant global economy and volatile international oil market. In order to overcome such external factors to affect their profitability negatively, companies are reviewing to conduct the related and unrelated diversification strategy at the corporate level such as participating in the development business of new oil resources, expanding the ratio of refining upgrade facilities and/or petro-chemical plants. Therefore, this paper analyzes Korean oil refining companies on the basis of global oil market and domestic industry structures as well as each company’s financial status and business portfolio to check whether their strategies are fit or not in this situation. After analyzing the effect on diversification for companies’ profitability empirically from 1998 to 2013, this paper concludes diversification strategy has affected the profitability positively while the company size and the refinery upgrade facility have been negatively affected regardless of whether global oil market is upward or downward. Also, the company group pursuing the related diversification strategy tend to achieve better profitability than the unrelated-diversified company group. On the basis of this analysis, this paper proposes that Korean companies should reinforce the capabilities for their non-oil business areas especially for the petrochemical business, enlarge the investment on the new oil development, and review on their operational efficiency for its refinery size and their unrelated diversification strategies thoroughly.
국내 정유기업들이 국내 경제에 중요한 역할을 해왔음에도 불구하고, 최근 세계 경제 침체와 석유시장의 변동성 심화에 따라 수익성은 점차 악화되고 있는 상황이다. 국내 정유기업들은 이러한 외부적 요인들을 극복하기 위한 전략의 일환으로, 고도화설비 증설, 석유개발 사업 진출, 석유화학 분야 진출 등 관련, 비관련 다각화 전략을 추진해오고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 세계 석유시장과 국내 정유산업의 구조적 특성, 국내 4대 정유기업의 재무성과와 사업 포트폴리오를 분석하고, 정유기업의 수익성에 미치는 주요 변수들을 도출한 뒤, 정유기업의 다각화 전략이 수익성에 미치는 영향을 실증 분석하였다. 1998년부터 2013년까지의 실증 분석 결과, 총다각화수준은 국내 정유기업의 호황기와 침체기에 관계없이 기업의 수익성에 긍정적으로 영향을 미친 반면, 기업규모와 고도화설비는 부정적인 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 국내 정유기업을 비관련 다각화 전략 추진 기업 군과 관련 다각화 전략 추진 기업 군으로 구분하여 진행한 분석에서는 관련 다각화 전략 추진 기업군의 수익성이 보다 긍정적인 것으로 나타났다. 따라서, 석유사업부문의 의존도를 낮추기 위하여 다각화 전략을 추진하는 국내 정유기업들은 석유개발사업 확대 및 석유화학부문의 역량 강화와 같은 관련 다각화 전략이 용이할 것으로 보이며, 추진중인 비관련 다각화 전략의 검증과 현재 기업규모 및 운영 효율성에 대한 검토가 필요한 상황이다.
