Today, mobile instant messengers (MIMs) act as a major interaction platform for helping users to in-teract via texting. In contrast with the common belief that the mobile message is intended to be read by the receiver; the incoming messages are sometimes exposed to nearby people, thus, making the receiver as well as the observer embarrassed. For example, incoming messages are easily seen by a person who is viewing smartphone photos together with the receiver. In this thesis, we uncover the users` perception about unwanted message exposure, in terms of whether the exposure is really significant issue in MIMs, and which situational contexts are core factors that affects the degree of embarrassment. We analyze 961 lively message delivery moments from 14 smartphone users using the experience sampling method (ESM), and it turns out that about 29% of messages have the potential to cause embarrassing situations. We also show that the relation-ships of the message receiver with the message sender and potential observer are the core factors which influ-ence the receiver`s perception, in terms of the degree of embarrassment. Based on the result, we develop the initial prototype and perform short-term deployment, and build the design considerations for the futuristic relationship-aware mobile messengers.
