Recent healthcare services are shifting to patient-centric healthcare in order to improve a quality of healthcare treatment, reduce a medical expenses. According to IBM`s `Patient-centric: the 21st Century prescription for healthcare`, technology, which makes healthcare information of patient must be continuously accessible via Internet, is required to realize patient-centric healthcare. Additionally Bluetooth Low Energy(BLE) based healthcare devices are erupted with popularization of smartphone in healthcare market. Therefore, In order to realize patient-centric healthcare with BLE healthcare devices, BLE healthcare device should be continuously accessible through Internet.
However current BLE devices cannot be directly accessed via Internet, so it require BLE smartphone applications to forward healthcare information to Internet. Furthermore current application is provided by manufacturer per each BLE device. The more patient uses various BLE devices, the more additional application is needed, then additional applications occur resource degradation of smartphone. In addition, current BLE only communicate with a paired smartphone, not a non-paired smartphone. If paired smartphones are not usable or exist nearby during the emergency situation, because an emergency data of BLE healthcare devices cannot be accessible by an emergency center, it may make critical problem to patient. Therefore, we apply Internet Protocol version 6(IPv6) to BLE to make BLE device be directly accessible via Internet. Also, we designed advertising data transmission protocol to guarantee BLE device to transmit emergency data via non-paired smartphone.
In this thesis, we propose IPv6 over BLE called 6BLE to provide seamless interoperability between BLE domain and Internet domain. The 6BLE is based on SNAIL platform, which support IPv6 connectivity on IEEE 802.15.4 by applying 6LoWPAN. In addition, we designed new parts, which were not defined or optimized a performance, for the 6BLE. First, we determine Internet Protocol Support Profile(IPSP) to setup 6BLE environment and transfer IPv6 packet. Second, we propose L2CAP MTU adaptive algorithm to optimize 6BLE fragmentation & Reassembly for improving network performance. Third, we designed conventional BLE & 6BLE dual-mode network stack to support compatibility. Lastly, we implemented advertising data transmission protocol to transfer emergency data through non-paired smartphone in order to ensure continuous access in an emergency situation, when paired smartphones are not usable.
We implemented 6BLE prototype, which is consisted of 6BLE end-device(healthcare device), and 6BLE gateway (smartphone). We compared `Round Trip Time` and `Throughput` between conventional BLE and 6BLE to proof feasibility about network performance of 6BLE. we proof that the 6BLE is feasible by showing 4 % of less `Round Trip Time` and 6 % of faster `Throughput` than BLE. Also, we implemented and showed transmission of emergency data by using advertising data transmission protocol through non-paired 6BLE gateway during the emergency situation, when paired 6BLE gateway are not usable or exist.
