Cognitive radio networks (CRNs) are composed of mobile users who can use multiple spectrum bands for communication. CRNs allow unlicensed users (called cognitive users) to efficiently utilize unused licensed spectrums without interfering with communications of licensed users (called primary users). The main goals of CRNs are to mitigate spectrum saturation and to improve spectrum utilization. This paper introduces state-of-the-art routing protocols for CRNs and addresses some limitations of these protocols. To resolve the limitations, we suggest a new research direction for routing protocols in CRNs. We implement our protocol to compare with the existing routing protocols for multi-hop CRNs. Our protocol shows good performance compared to the existing routing protocols in terms of network performance and PU protection.
기존의 무선 네트워크는 스펙트럼이라 불리우는 주파수 대역 자원을 특정 목적에 맞게 고정시켜 놓고, 그 고정된 주파수를 이용해 통신하는 방식을 취해왔다. 최근 들어서 무선 기기 (스마트폰, 태블릿 PC) 의 수요 증가와 수많은 무선 어플리케이션들의 등장으로 인해 주파수에 대한 수요가 지수적으로 급격히 증가하게 되었고, 이로 인해서 고정된 주파수 사용은 스펙트럼 부족과 스펙트럼의 비효율적인 이용이라는 문제를 야기하게 되었다. 따라서, 독점적으로 사용하던 스펙트럼의 효율성을 높이는 방법으로 하나의 고정된 스펙트럼이 아닌 여러 스펙트럼을 다중적으로 이용하는 새로운 개념의 시스템에 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 이러한 개념을 가지고 탄생한 것이 J, Mitola가 제안한 Cognitive Radio (CR) 이고, 이를 무선 네트워크에 적용시킨 것이 Cognitive Ratio Networks 이다. Cognitive Radio 의 핵심은 unlicensed user가 licensed spectrum을 licensed user의 Quality of Service (QoS)를 보장하면서 효율적으로 이용하는데에 있다. licensed spectrum은 상대적으로 많이 이용되지 않아 비어있고, 반면에 unlicensed spectrum은 과포화 상태이므로 CR 기술은 unlicensed spectrum 에서의 과포화 문제를 해결함과 동시에 licensed spectrum의 자원 낭비를 동시에 해소할 수 있다. Cognitive Radio Networks는 CR 기술이 적용됨에 따라, 위와 같은 기존 무선 네트워크와 다른 이슈들이 생겨나게 되었다. 따라서, Cognitive Radio Networks에 맞는 새로운 기술들에 대한 연구가 필요하게 되었다.
