Pilot contamination is the biggest issue in massive MIMO because it causes a bottleneck for enhancing throughout. This thesis considers the problem of channel estimation in multi-cell multi-user cellular network with large-scale antenna system. One promising channel estimation technique among existing research is based on grouping interferers based on the angle of arrival (AOA) so that only second-order channel statistics are used in channel estimation to avoid pilot contamination through the coordination. In this work, our objectives are to control AOAs by efficient pilot assignment without cell to cell coordination at the expense of added pilot time. A novel pilot assignment scheme in conjunction with cell aligning based on six pilot sets is proposed. The gain in terms of channel estimation error over the conventional scheme with full pilot reuse is confirmed by simulation. In addition, for sufficient coherence time, the sum-rate of the proposed scheme is better than both the full reuse scheme and the one based on a reuse factor of 3.
Massive MIMO
