The Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) with a traditional steam Rankine cycle was operated successfully in the past. However, the potential hazard from sodium-water reaction (SWR) has posed a design challenge for a SFR. For this reason, the supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycle was suggested as an alternative power conversion system. The studies on the S-CO2 Brayton cycle revealed that several advantages (i.e. relatively high thermal efficiency, compactness of turbomachinery and heat exchangers, and elimination of SWR) can be found for this design option. Despite these competitive features, a reactive process of liquid sodium and CO2 will follow when the pressure boundary of sodium-CO2 heat exchanger fails.
It is important to investigate possible issues in sodium-CO2 HX because the pressure boundary is an interface standing a large pressure difference. Furthermore, sodium-CO2 interaction is complex and highly affected by the sodium temperature. So far, there have been active studies on thermodynamic and kinetic features of sodium-CO2 interaction. It is important to investigate sodium-CO2 interaction with phenomenological approach. However, in order to evaluate and improve the safety and economics of the whole system, the study on the consequences of sodium-CO2 interaction through a systematical approach is also essential.
This research was implemented to evaluate essential safety issues expected in sodium-CO2 heat exchanger prior to applying the S-CO2 Brayton cycle for a SFR. The experiment was conducted to measure the exact sodium ignition point to understand the safety margin of the SFR operating conditions. Based on the experimental results, the safety issue concerned with the sodium ignition was systematically discussed in comparison with the EBR-II data. To realistically simulate the transient response of Na-CO2 heat exchanger during the CO2 leak process, two simplified numerical flow models (i.e. isentropic and Fanno flow model) were developed from several assumptions. If these models can reasonably simulate the CO2 leak scenario, it will be significantly useful to predict the variation of CO2 mass flow rate and the consequent system dynamics (i.e. system pressure variation, temperature increase due to chemical reaction, quantity of reaction products, and so on). These numerical predictions can be used for base information to evaluate the probability of having sodium ignition event during the CO2 leak event. For the reduction of economic losses due to sodium-CO2 interaction, a scoping study to find a material which can clean up the solid reaction product created from the sodium-CO2 interaction, mainly Na2CO3, was performed. Since the solid reaction products can plug the flow channel or contaminate the system, it is necessary to find some methods for removing them.
At this end, it is expected that this research will play an important role in the application of S-CO2 Brayton cycle to SFRs in the future.
