Solar energy conversion to useable form of energy is a key issue in the society. Among many conversion strategies, photoelectrochemical or solar water splitting is a sustainable and clean method to store solar energy in the form of hydrogen fuels. Hydrogen fuels can solve problems of electrical energy from solar cell, which is hard to be stored and transported stably. Conventionally, researchers have studied photoelectrochemical water splitting using semiconductors and organic dyes; however, these approaches have been struggled by their narrow absorption ranges and instability in aqueous media. To solve the problem, some researchers introduced metal nanostructures to harvest light by surface plasmon resonance. Unfortunately, the importance of relationship between light absorption and charge transfer is underestimated. Here, I suggested photoelectrochemical water splitting structures which consider surface plasmon and hot carrier utilization. The structures are mainly fabricated via thin film processes. It is confirmed that hydrogen is evolved durably. Structural effects of gold nanostrucutres are also investigated. This approach gives insight to improve plasmonic water splitting performance and show possibility to fabricate photoelectrochemical cell based on thin film technology.
