Nowadays many smartphone users experience stress from receiving notifications all of the time. In particular, more than half of smartphone notifications come from messengers. This study attempts to under-stand the users’ stress from receiving smartphone messenger notifications, and determines the stressors. Also, this study identifies and validates notification design implications to reduce stress from smartphone messen-gers. In order to understand the user, an online survey and interviews were conducted with 95 smartphone user participants who used the same messenger application. This study investigated how users actively set their smartphone notifications in their daily lives and how users became stressed from receiving these notifi-cations. Six stressors were founded in three categories based on an affinity analysis of interview data. From this understanding, design implications for the notification system in smartphone messengers were proposed, in which the user can still be effectively aware of his or her notifications but can also reduce stress in his or her life. Lastly, the implications were validated through two in-situ experiments during four weeks each.
