Information scraps are personal information that fall outside of the formal information management tools. Nowadays, smartphones play an important role as input and output tools. Information scraps in smartphones occur with a camera, virtual keyboard, voice recorder, and stylus pen. In particular, information scraps generated by taking pictures and capturing screens happen frequently in everyday life, and the generated pictures are exclusive information type that appears in smartphones. The text information saved as an image format is called "text image". The micronote lifecycle model is utilized as a framework to understand the characteristics and behavior patterns related to the information scraps. In this study, the lifecycle of smartphone text images was reconstructed based on the micronote lifecycle model. With the text images collected from users, the roles of text images were classified as temporary storage, long-term storage, and semi-permanent collection. The characteristics of lifecycles and behavior patterns related to each role of text images were also investigated. Furthermore, the role changes of text images and characteristics of lifecycles were observed with a user-centered research method. In addition, the participants required systematic support for effective deletion process based on the roles, even though previous studies related to the information scraps revealed that the process of information deletion did not actively occur. Based on the characteristics of the lifecycle of text images and collected expectations from user research, design implications for text images were suggested. Design implications included plans for offering text images at the appropriate moment, selectively collecting information, grouping and maintaining text images in a gallery application, and connecting to the related information with text images. This study dealt with text images as an information type of information scraps from the smartphone, and usage patterns were explored based on the reconstructed lifecycle model of information scraps. Additionally, design implications were suggested with the observed behavior pattern. It is believed that expectations from the users and the implications will be helpful by providing ideas and insights for both future academic studies and practical design fields.
정보스크랩은 특정 개인정보관리도구에 담기지 않고 비체계적으로 수집되는 메모형태의 정보를 의미한다. 최근 스마트폰은 정보스크랩을 위한 입 출력 도구로서 중요한 역할을 하고 있다. 스마트폰에서의 정보스크랩은 카메라, 타이핑, 음성녹음, 펜타입의 드로잉의 입력방법을 통하여 다양하게 일어나는데, 정보를 카메라로 촬영하거나 스마트폰 내부의 정보를 스크린샷으로 남기는 방법은 빈번하게 일어나며 스마트폰에서 독특하게 나타나는 정보스크랩 방법이다. 이렇게 이미지화 된 텍스트를 `텍스트사진 (Text Images)`라는 용어로 정의할 수 있다. Lin이 제시한 마이크로노트의 라이프사이클 모델은 다양한 정보스크랩(Micronotes)의 이용행태를 이해하기 위한 유용한 프레임웍이다.
본 연구에서는 마이크로노트 라이프사이클 모델을 반영, 수정하여 스마트폰 텍스트사진의 라이프사이클 모델을 재구축하고, 이를 바탕으로 이용행태의 특성을 파악하였다. 수집된 텍스트사진과 관련된 인터뷰를 통하여 텍스트사진의 용도를 단기적, 중장기적, 반영구적 수집으로 분류하여 각 용도에서 나타나는 라이프사이클의 특성과 용도에 따른 이용행태를 파악하였다. 나아가 텍스트사진의 용도 변화에 따른 라이프사이클과 이용행태의 특성을 사용자중심적인 연구방법을 통하여 탐색하였다.
텍스트사진의 용도변화는 일시적 활용에서 중장기적 활용으로의 역할변화, 일시적활용/중장기 활용에서 반영구적 수집으로의 역할 변화, 반영구적 역할 수집에서 중장기적 활용으로의 역할변화, 중장기적 활용에서 단기적 활용으로의 역할변화가 관찰 되었고, 각각의 역할변화가 일어나는 텍스트사진의 라이프사이클과 이용행태에 관하여 알아보았다. 또한 텍스트사진의 경우 기존에 연구된 정보스크랩이 삭제를 미루며 소극적으로 일어난다는 결과와 다르게 유용하게 활용되는 기간에 따라 삭제에 대한 니즈가 두드러지게 나타난 것을 알 수 있었다.
텍스트사진의 라이프사이클 특성과 사용자조사를 통해 수집된 텍스트사진의 니즈를 반영하여 디자인 적용방안을 제안하였다. 디자인 적용방안은 텍스트사진을 적절한 시기에 제공하고 관리하는 방안, 정보를 선택적으로 수집하는 방안, 정보가 그룹화 되는 방법, 관련된 정보와의 유기적인 연결을 위한 방안이 제시되었다. 본 연구는 텍스트사진을 정보스크랩의 한 방법으로서 연구의 영역으로 다루었으며, 라이프사이클 모델의 재 구축을 통해 텍스트사진이 현재 활용되고 있는 이용행태를 실질적으로 고찰하였다는 데 의의가 있다. 또한 관찰 된 이용행태와 사용자로부터 실질적으로 얻은 니즈를 반영한 디자인 적용방안을 제안하여 학문적영역에서의 향후연구 및 실무 디자인 및 개발을 위한 아이디어와 인사이트를 제공하였다는 데 의의가 있다.
