Since a Fukushima nuclear plant accident in Japan 2011, there have been a lot of demands for a robot performing tasks on behalf of humans in the disaster. A lot of robots have been designed and developed, but they are not capable of coping with the kind of the disaster yet. They were failed at completing tasks or their missions were very restricted due to their limitation of their abilities. In this situation, DARPHA hosted a robotics challenge to make robotic engineers in the world wide focus on this issue and concentrate their ability on this challenge to deal with the catastrophy like the Fukushima accident. As the significance of developing a robot for a disaster is roaring up, my laboratory is designing and developing a legged robot to be used in case of a nuclear accident happened in Korea. In my paper, I suggest the robot`s manipulator design. First robot`s tasks in the nuclear plants are determined and analyzed quantitatively. Second functional requirements and design parameters are determined. Finally optimal parameters are obtained by a Genetic Algorithm to minimize the weight of the manipulator satisfying the constraints, and performing tasks.
