The purpose of the paper is to analyze the patterns of innovation and figure out the direction of innovation in mobile instant messaging services. In this study, two cases are used to analyze the patterns of innovation. The cases are KakaoTalk that is the dominant mobile instant messaging service in South Korea and LINE that is prominent mobile instant messaging service in Japan. Both cases have similar patterns of innovation. Firstly, they started to focus on improving core function that is communication through mobile application software updates. Secondly, the services added various linked services for social networking and marketing such as Kakao Story, LINE Home, Plus friend, Official Account and Item store. Beyond the social and marketing platform, the direction of innovations ultimately is to become a contents platform. Based on the case studies, I propose the new type of service innovation patterns. This study suggests important basic framework of analysing the innovation patterns of mobile services. And the finding will help mobile service providers to develop new service.
본 논문의 목적은 모바일 인스턴트 메세징 서비스의 혁신 패턴을 분석하고 혁신의 방향성을 알아보는 것이다. 한국의 카카오톡, 일본의 라인 두 가지 사례 분석을 통해 모바일 인스턴트 메세징 서비스의 혁신 패턴을 분석했다. 두 서비스 모두 유사한 혁신 패턴을 보였다. 첫째, 두 서비스들은 모바일 어플리케이션의 업데이트를 통해 핵심 기능인 커뮤니케이션 기능을 강화했다. 둘째, 카카오스토리, 라인 홈, 플러스 친구, 공식 계정과 같은 서비스들을 출시하며 소셜 플랫폼과 마케팅 플랫폼으로 진화했다. 두 서비스는 궁극적으로 컨텐츠 플랫폼으로 진화하는 방향성을 보였다. 이와 같은 사례 연구를 통해 새로운 서비스 이노베이션 패턴을 제시했으며, 본 연구 결과는 모바일 서비스의 혁신 패턴 분석에 중요한 프레임워크가 된다. 또한 모바일 서비스 제공자들이 새로운 서비스를 개발할 때 도움이 될 것이다.
