Demand for medicine and medical costs in the East Asian countries has increased exponentially depending on the social environmental changes such as rapid economic growth during the last decade and entering the aging society. Through the upsurge of the pharmaceutical market in East Asia region, many countries in this region have built substantial capabilities of pharmaceutical industry. Especially, South Korea and China which lead the regional economy of the East Asia region are sustained effort and invest for reducing the gap between themselves and pharmaceutical developed countries. This paper presents catch-up framework of innovative strategies for improving capabilities of pharmaceutical industry in South Korea and China based on the comprehensively analysis of catch-up theory, innovation patterns of global pharmaceutical industry and current capabilities of both countries’ pharmaceutical industry.
최근 수 년간의 급격한 경제성장, 고령화 사회 진입 등의 사회환경 변화로 인해 동아시아 지역 국가들의 의약품 수요가 빠른 속도로 증가하고 있다. 이와 같은 제약시장의 급격한 성장을 바탕으로, 해당 지역의 많은 국가들이 자국 제약산업의 역량을 강화하기 위한 투자를 지속하고 있다. 특히 동아시아 지역의 경제를 이끌어가는 한국과 중국은 제약산업 유관학문 분야의 기술 역량 확보와 제약산업에 요구되는 인프라 구축을 위한 전략을 수립 및 추진하고 있으며 이를 통해 제약산업 선진국가와의 격차를 줄이고자 노력하고 있다. 본 연구는 기술 추격 이론, 세계 제약산업의 혁신 패턴, 그리고 한국과 중국의 제약산업 현황을 총체적으로 분석하여 특징적인 면들을 도출한 후, 양 국이 가진 가능성과 한계를 바탕으로 양 국의 제약산업 성장을 위한 추격전략을 제시한 연구이다.
