I examine whether the patterns of inter-industry trade flows impact the price discovery in the Korean stock market. Using the Korean stock market data, I find that (i) stocks that are in economically related sup-plier and customer industries can cross-predict each other’s returns, (ii) the significance of return cross-predictability increases with the degree of domestic demand and consumption in the market as proxied by the ratio of domestic sales to total sales of each company, (iii) the magnitude of return cross-predictability is in-dependent of the level of analyst coverage proxing how much information is available, and (iv) there is no real profit from the arbitrage strategy based on the inter-relationship amongst industries, which supports the Effi-cient Market Hypothesis.
본 논문에서는 한국 주식 시장에서 산업 연관 관계가 가격 형성에 영향을 주는지에 대하여 연구하였다. 한국 주식 시장의 자료들과 한국은행의 산업 연관표를 활용하여 다음과 같은 사실들을 알 수 있었다. 첫째, 경제적으로 공급자 산업에 관련된 주식들과 소비자 산업에 관련된 주식들의 상호 예측 관계를 발견하였다. 둘째, 공급자 산업과 소비자 산업의 상호 예측 유효성은 한국 시장 내의 개별 회사들의 매출의 내수 의존도와 비례함을 발견하였다. 셋째, 공급자 산업과 소비자 산업의 상호 예측성의 크기는 정보 수준과는 무관한 것을 발견하였다. 마지막으로, 공급자와 산업자의 산업 연관 관계를 활용한 매수 매도 포트폴리오의 실질 수익률은 유효하지 않음을 알 수 있었다. 이러한 사실들은 적어도 한국 주식 시장에서 시장 참여자들이 주식 투자를 할 때 산업 간의 관계를 적극적으로 활용하고 있다는 사실에 대한 근거로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.
