The Lee-Carter model is one of the forecasting models that are widely used in both academic literature and practice. To supplement the shortcomings of the original Lee-Carter model, the Lee-Miller model and the Booth-Maindonald-Smith model were developed. Both are supposed to overcome the limitations the original Lee-Carter model has and improve the accuracy of the forecast. The three models are evaluated using Korea`s population and mortality data from 1983 to 2010. The performance of each model is compared using the forecast errors and the life expectancies. The contributing factors of such differences in the results are also analyzed. The Lee-Miller model underperforms in forecasting the mortality rates. While the Lee-Carter and the Booth-Maindonald-Smith models show similar results, the later generate more accurate forecasts. All three models seem to underestimate Korea`s mortality rate.
