This thesis focuses on studying trading patterns of investors and returns around earnings announcement date. If information asymmetry exhibits in the market, investors would enjoy abnormal profit by buying stocks prior to earnings announcement and close the position after the earnings announcement. We study whether the abnormal profit exists in Korea market as a whole. We classify classes of investor groups into individual, institutional, and foreign and seek which investor groups share the abnormal profit. In the case where the abnormal profit exists, we verify whether the profit is due to private information and trading skill or liquidity provision. And we also focus both on the relation between investors trading and returns around earnings announcements.
Major finding in this thesis is that institutional investors share most of the abnormal profit by trading before the earnings announcement date. And the half of cumulative abnormal profit of institutional investors is found to be due to private information or trading skill. We define the normalized earnings surprise(ES) as actual operating profit minus the profit forecast and divided by the price on the forecast date in order to find relation between investors trading and returns around earnings announcements. By ES analyst we find institutional investors’ ability is outstanding in forecasting earnings at 5% significance level.
