The credit default swap (CDS) spread is frequently used as a proxy for the credit risk of a corporate bond. In this thesis, I investigate the determinants of the CDS spread in Korea markets with using both market and individual factors which are drawn from structural and reduced models of extant studies. I also introduce the concept of the excess CDS spread, which is defined by the difference between individual and government CDS spreads, and compare the determinants of the excess spread with those of the raw spread. Main results can be summarized as follows. First, the estimated signs of determinant variables are consistent with many prior studies that focused on the period of the 2008 financial crisis. Second, the significance levels of individual factors are, however, very low in multivariate regression models. In particular, individual factors such as leverage ratio, ROA, and past stock performance do explain little of the excess CDS spread during the stable period after the 2008 financial crisis. Third, the volatility of the stock market index outweigh other market and individual factors.
