Prior studies report evidence that at quarter- and year-end institutional investors excessively increase to buy and/or reduce to sell stocks that they already had in their holdings to inflate the net asset value of their holdings (called portfolio pumping) and that they also try to distort reported holdings to mislead investors by buying stocks that performed well and selling stocks that performed poorly (called window dressing).
Unlike prior studies that mostly focus on the U.S. stock markets, we analyze international investors’ trades across 19 countries using their daily trading data to provide further evidence about investors’ behavior at quarter- and year-end. We also investigate whether the information environment of a country influences their quarter- and year-end trading behaviors.
Consistent with the findings of prior studies, we also find evidence of portfolio pumping. Differently from prior studies, however, we find that international fund managers try to inflate their funds’ performance by abnormally increasing to buy, rather than abnormally reducing to sell, stocks. We also find some evidence that institutional portfolio pumping behavior tends to be stronger in countries with weaker information environments. With respect to window dressing, we find no significant evidence, suggesting that international fund managers have less incentive to window dress their holdings.
