Platform markets are typically served by only a few competing platforms, that is, winner-takes-all phenomenon is common in this area. This research aims to examine the generic factors that are highly related to the phenomenon by comparing mature markets. Entry barrier, same-side network effect, cross-side network effect, multi-homing cost, switching cost and demand for differentiation are considered as key factors which can influence on the degree of market share concentration in the platform business. The results suggest that same-side network effect is the most closely related factor with the winner-takes-all phenomenon. Top four industries in terms of the same-side network show extremely one-sided market share and all have a dominant platform which takes up more than 70% market share in each industry. The results also suggest that industries with high cross-side network effect usually have dominant platforms, but they cannot have overwhelming market share without same-side network effect.
마이크로소프트, 구글, 페이스북 등 플랫폼 기업이 각 산업 분야를 선도하면서 플랫폼 비즈니스에 대한 관심과 중요성이 커지고 있다. 플랫폼 산업에서는 특정 플랫폼이 시장점유율을 압도적으로 가져가는 승자독식(Winner-takes-all)현상이 종종 발생하는데, 본 연구에서는 이러한 현상과 밀접한 관계가 있는 구조적인 요인을 실증적인 연구를 통해 찾고자 하였다. 플랫폼 산업에서 시장점유율 집중 정도에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요인으로 6가지 (진입장벽, Same-side 네트워크효과, Cross-side 네트워크효과, 멀티호밍비용, 전환비용, 차별화수요)를 선정하였고, 성숙기에 접어든 대표적인 플랫폼 산업 10개를 연구에 포함시켜 비교 분석하였다. 연구 결과 승자독식현상과 가장 직접적인 연관이 있는 요인은 Same-side 네트워크효과 인 것으로 나타났다. Same-side 네트워크효과가 가장 큰 상위 4개 산업은 모두 선두 플랫폼의 시장점유율이 70% 이상으로 시장점유율의 쏠림 현상도 가장 심했다. 반면, Cross-side 네트워크효과가 큰 산업의 경우 선두 플랫폼이 존재하지만 압도적인 시장점유율을 가져가지는 못한다는 것을 알 수 있었다.
