The purpose of this paper is to examine the underlying mechanism of Gamification concept as a marketing phenomenon in the context of wearable devices market. Gamification is to take digital game elements into non-game contexts to influence user motivation. According to Self-Determination Theory (Ryan & Deci, 2000), externally regulated motivations can be internalized and integrated into identified or intrinsic motivation when three basic psychological needs are met, namely autonomy, competence, and relatedness. We hypothesized that game elements in a wearable device would be able to satisfy those needs and foster internalization and integration of external motivation into internally oriented motivations. Moreover, we suggested that autonomy need satisfaction by a goal-setting game element would be a relatively important feature than real-time feedback and online sharing features that satisfy competence and relatedness needs. We conducted a survey and analyzed the results using Hayes’ INDIRECT macro (2013) and found that self-determined motivations have indirect effect on various behavioral outcomes, such as effort and behavioral intentions when user’s psychological needs were met. Our results also proved that autonomy satisfaction through the goal-setting feature possesses relative importance as compared to real-time feedback and online sharing features in promoting the indirect effect of selfdetermined motivation on behavioral consequences. Lastly, we found partial evidence that the gamified wearable device that promotes internalization and integration of motivation drives desirable consumer behaviors, such as purchase intention and positive brand attitude.
(Ryan & Deci,
INDIRECT macro (2013)
