`Chaebol`, a group of large-scale enterprises, is a type of business group which only exists in Korea. This paper analyzes how business group affiliation affects R&D productivity of firms empirically, by using a dataset of Korean manufacturing industry.
Existing literature mostly analyzes how business group affiliation affects R&D inputs (such as R&D intensity) or outputs (such as number of patents applied). However, this paper concentrates on affiliated firms` R&D productivity, while defining R&D productivity as number of applied patent per R&D investment.
The estimation results are as follows: (1) In Korean manufacturing industry of mid-2000s, firms belonging to business group tend to exhibit higher R&D intensity than stand-alone firms. (2) However, group-affiliated large firms tend to exhibit lower R&D productivity than independent large firms. (3) Scale of R&D personnel and R&D productivity of a firm has inverted-U shape relationship.
`재벌`이라는 대규모 기업집단은 한국에만 나타나는 기업 형태이다. 본 연구에서는 한국의 제조업 데이터를 이용하여, 기업집단이라는 형태가 혁신활동의 생산성에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 기존의 연구들은 기업집단 소속 여부가 기업의 R&D 입력(R&D 집약도, 연구개발 투자 여부 등)과 출력(출원한 특허의 개수 등) 측면에 미치는 영향을 주로 분석했다. 반면 본 연구에서는 R&D 투자 대비 출원한 특허의 개수를 R&D 생산성으로 정의하고, 기업집단 소속 여부가 R&D 생산성에 미치는 영향을 기업의 법정유형(대기업, 중소기업)에 따라 나누어 분석한다.
그 결과 다음과 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 첫째로, 2000년대 중반 한국의 제조업에서도, 기업집단 계열사는 독립기업보다 높은 R&D 강도를 가지는 경향이 있다. 그러나, 기업집단 소속 대기업은 독립 대기업보다 낮은 R&D 생산성을 가진다. 마지막으로, 연구개발 인력의 규모와 R&D 생산성 사이의 상관관계는 역 U자형으로 나타난다.
