This paper aims at examining closely the lead-lag relation between US and Asian stock markets due to non-overlapping trading hours and investigating its implication for market efficiency. Daily close-to-close and open-to-close returns for the period 1993-2013 are used to investigate the relation, and five methodologies are employed: analysis based on an econometric model that reduces the variable-ordering problem VAR models have, synchronicity analysis of stock returns, analysis of conditional expectation and conditional probability, decomposition of Pearson’s correlation, and analysis of market efficiency. The results reveal that the influence of US market on Asian markets is stronger than the influence of Asian markets on US market. The signs and distributions of Asian markets’ returns are highly affected by the previous-day return of US market. In addition, the impact of US market on Asian markets is a key factor which determines the Pearson’s correlation between US and Asian market returns. However, the influence of US market is reflected mostly on the opening prices of Asian markets, suggesting that market efficiency is largely preserved.
