Previous literatures have highlighted the economic role of the corporate stock repurchase which links to the information content within the program. In addition, studies have shown the information content depends on the situation of the repurchasing firms which represents the motivation of the share repurchase decision. This paper predicts that institutional investors, with their excess resources and professional expertise should be able to distinguish whether the information content within the share repurchase is delivering good news of the announc-ing firm. Empirical tests which are constructed to avoid potential endogeniety issues present results that the own-ership increase of institutional investors around the share repurchase announcements has significantly positive relationship with the repurchasing firms’ long-run stock performance. Moreover, the relationship was stronger among low book to market ratio firms, which have higher incentives to signal their undervaluation by repurchas-ing stocks.
선행 연구들에서는 자사주 매입이 포함 하고 있는 정보들의 경제적 역할에 대해 연구 했다. 그리고 자사주 매입의 정보는 매입 동기와 회사의 상황에 따라서 달라진 다는 것 역시 기존 논문들에 의해 밝혀졌다. 이 논문은 기관 투자자들이 자원적 우위와 전문성을 이용하여 자사주 매입이 전달하는 정보를 분석하고 수익을 창출할 것이라는 가설 하에 실증 연구를 진행 하였다. 내생성 문제를 고려한 통계 분석 결과 기관투자자들의 자사주 매입 시의 지분 변화와 주식 수익률 간에 양의 상관 관계를 관찰 하였다. 그리고 그 양의 상관 관계는 자사주 매입을 통해 저평가된 회사의 가치를 알리려는 회사들에 대해 더 유의하게 관찰되었다.
